Men Have Room For Improvement When It Comes To Caring For Their Smile!

Guys – when it comes to the battle of the sexes, you’re losing when it comes to your smile!
According to a survey by the Centers For Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), only 66 percent of males brush their teeth twice or more a day compared with 86 percent of females who do so.
The study of over 800 participants included completion of a written questionnaire on dental knowledge and oral health habits. The study, shared by the Journal of Periodontology, also included an oral exam of each participant to detect signs of periodontal disease. (https://www.perio.org/consumer/gender-differences)
Things don’t get much better when it comes to flossing, but that pertains to both sexes. Only 49 percent in the survey stated they floss on a daily basis. Even worse,1 out of 3 assumed that seeing blood in the sink when brushing is normal and were unaware it is a sign of periodontal (gum) disease.
The study also showed women as twice as likely to see their dentist for regular dental check-ups and more likely to follow through with recommended dental treatment. As a result, it was no surprise that the study revealed women had better levels of gum health with less dental plaque, calculus, and bleeding.
Men – remember that gum disease is the nation’s leading cause of adult tooth loss. If the thoughts of enduring tooth extractions and replacement decisions don’t motivate you to brush and floss more, try this image. Oral bacteria are living, breathing and eating creatures that live in our mouths. Like any living thing, what is eaten is then released through defecation. Yes, these organisms do this in your mouth! If you’ve ever wondered about bad breath, keep this vision in mind and, if nothing else, that alone should motivate you to brush more often!
Also, be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease, which is an over-accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. Initial symptoms are tender or swollen gums, seeing blood in the sink when brushing, and frequent bad breath. However, keep in mind that some signs don’t emerge until gum disease is running rampant.
As the disease worsens, you may experience persistent bad breath, gums that turn red in color (versus a healthy pink) and pus-filled pockets that form at the base of teeth. Untreated, you’ll eventually experience gums that pull away from teeth and teeth that loosen and may require removal.
It takes mere minutes each day to avoid this disease. And it’s easy and inexpensive. Use a soft to medium toothbrush and brush for two minutes twice daily. Brush in a swirling motion rather than scrub back and forth, which wears down tender gum tissues. After brushing teeth, brush your tongue to remove hoards of oral bacteria embedded in the tongue. Swish and spit several times.
You should also floss daily to remove food particles caught between teeth that a toothbrush can’t dislodge. If you find flossing too awkward or uncomfortable, purchase a water flosser. These are easy to use and equally as effective.
Last but not least, see your general dentist twice a year. These appointments remove calculus (also referred to as tartar), which are hardened forms of oral bacteria that eat away at tooth enamel and gum tissues.
It is important to have a healthy mouth, which research has shown also supports a healthy body. It has been found that the toxic bacteria of gum disease can trigger inflammatory reactions elsewhere in the body. A growing number of health problems have been linked to gum disease, including some cancers, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, preterm babies, erectile dysfunction (ED) and impotency.

Dental Fear? We Provide Patient Comfort In Many Ways!

I have a friend whose wife is a notorious backseat driver, and she freely admits it. Her husband, actually a good driver, has become used to her ‘guidance’ when they’re on the road. She explains it like this: “When I see brake lights suddenly appear in front of us as we’re going seventy miles an hour, I don’t know that his foot is on the brake pedal, ready to respond. All I know is the urge inside of me to warn him. He knows I can’t help it.”
I agree. We all react to certain things automatically. When some people see a spider for instance, they may become fearful and want to flee. Other people react to seeing a spider by rolling up a newspaper, ready to eliminate the intruder.
When it comes to dental fear, different people have different levels. Some of our patients are very relaxed in our office, from the moment they walk in and throughout treatment. Others are fine until they are seated in the treatment chair. Still, others are nervous and uneasy the entire time.
Periodontal (gum) disease is the result of an accumulation of oral bacteria. It is also the leading cause of adult tooth loss. As a Periodontist, I find that most individuals have developed gum disease because they were too afraid of having regular dental care. Many avoid going to the dentist for years, only ‘giving in’ when something becomes so painful they can no longer delay treatment.
Dental fear and anxiety are often the result of an unfortunate experience in a dentist’s office that made the person feel out of control and trapped. I know this can go deep. I’ve heard patients tell how a dentist continued to work on them even when they’d told him or her they were not numb. I’ve heard patients tell me about being held down in a treatment chair as a child. And, I’ve heard patients tell me they have no idea where their fears came from, yet smells and sounds trigger sweating or a more rapid heartbeat.
If you experience these feelings associated with dental visits, there is nothing ‘wrong’ with you. It’s likely your individual response to something that makes you feel vulnerable because you’ve either heard people relay experiences of discomfort or have experienced it yourself, it’s normal to anticipate pain – sometimes even before being touched.
Perceived pain can be just as real to some people as actual pain.

Oral sedation is a pill that helps patients relax. It also has an amnesiac effect, leaving most with little or no memory of treatment afterward. I.V. sedation places the patient in a deeper sedative state, also erasing memory of the procedure. It is administered by a doctor of anesthesiology for optimal comfort and safety. With both, patients are monitored with advanced safety equipment throughout treatment.

Before & After Sedation Instructions

At Biltmore Periodontics, we pride ourselves on providing optimal safety and comfort to our patients, for every appointment and regardless of the procedure. For some procedures, patients are sedated. Typically, this occurs through “twilight sleep,” which is delivered intravenously (I.V.) by a doctor who is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, Dr. Brad Stone.
I.V. Sedation places patients in a sleep-like state throughout the procedure. Too, it creates an amnesiac effect so there is no memory of the procedure afterwards. Throughout, the patient is closely monitored by Dr. Stone who uses specific safety equipment. This includes several monitors: EKG (heart), blood pressure, pulse, exhaled carbon dioxide and oxygen saturation.
The sedation process includes instructions both before and after. Dr. Stone will call you prior to your procedure to review your medical history. During this conversation, he will explain sedation and answer any questions.
Following these instructions will help you enjoy a optimal comfort with a quick recovery:
Instructions For BEFORE You Are Sedated
• Eating – No food or any type of dairy product after midnight. In cases scheduled for later the next day, you may be allowed a light meal (example: toast, NO fatty foods) for up to six (6) hours before the procedure. It is critical your stomach is empty by the time of the procedure.
• Drinking – Moderate amounts of clear liquids (water, juice, Pedialyte, Gatorade, soda) can be consumed up to three (3) hours prior to your appointment.
• Attire – Wear loose, comfortable clothing. With colder weather, layering is best. For children, a ‘pull-up’ may help with ‘accidents.’
• Medications – Unless specifically advised, it is recommended to take all medications as prescribed with a small amount of water.
• Transportation – No patient who receives sedation or anesthesia is allowed to operate a vehicle following discharge from our dental office! All patients must have a responsible adult stay with them until they are fully recovered.
Instructions For AFTER You Are Sedated
After you are released from our office, the most important thing you can do is to return home and REST. Giving your body a chance to recover after having anesthesia is best achieved through resting.
Adults
Take your time when moving. Use help or assistance as much as possible. As you move from lying to sitting or sitting to standing, move slowly. If you experience dizziness, lie or sit back down and rest. When climbing stairs, have someone help and assist you. Remember also…
• No driving for the remainder of the day.
• Avoid operation of mechanical or electrical machinery/devices.
• Avoid making any important decisions or signing important documents.
• Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages and/or smoking.
• Avoid any unaccompanied activity.
Children
Children who have been sedated should be carefully monitored by a responsible adult for 4 hours after returning home.
• No climbing, running or riding bicycles for the rest of the day.
Medications: Resume taking prescribed medications once you are drinking fluids. If you receive prescriptions for the procedure, take those as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or Motrin are allowed and may be helpful.
Eating & Drinking: Liquids may be consumed as soon as possible following sedation. Begin with frequent small quantities of clear fluids (such as water, juice and soda). Increase your diet as desired depending on how you feel.
In addition to instructions for sedation, your procedure may include specific guidelines you should follow. We will review those with you carefully. It is our goal to help you achieve an optimal treatment outcome with the highest level of safety and comfort.

Afraid Of Going To The Dentist? Fear Has Big Price Tag.

In my periodontal specialty, I see a large number of patients who have developed gum disease or have lost teeth because they were too afraid to go to a dentist. Some people have even avoided dental care for decades. Yet, like a leaky roof on a house, ignoring the problem only leads to bigger, more complicated issues to deal with eventually that can’t be avoided.
Dental fear is a major problem in the U.S. and is a contributing factor to developing periodontal disease. Because gum disease begins without obvious warning signs, it is often allowed to develop further. This can create more complex problems and the need for treatment that is more involved and costly than if caught early on.
Gum disease, at some level, affects over 47% of American adults. However, most Americans are unfamiliar with the typical warning signs. These include tender gums that bleed easily when brushing, bad breath and swollen gums. As the disease progresses, gums become redder from inflammation and may recede from teeth, exposing tooth roots segments that are sensitive to hot and cold.
While it is estimated that over 70% of adults have some level of dental fear, from anxiety to dental phobia (an uncontrollable reaction that causes some adults to shake, sweat or even cry when faced with a dental visit), there is no typical persona when it comes to who has dental fear and who does not. There is no common age, gender or educational level, nor is there a typical income level.
What is ‘normal,’ so to speak, is the fact that most dental fear exists because of a traumatic experience in a dental chair in the past. This may have been as a child when a dentist was too rough or forceful. It may have been as an adult when the patient was not yet numb, yet the dentist continued to work on a tooth.
Dental fear, once embedded in the brain, often triggers perceived pain in the future. What exacerbates it is how it leaves a patient feeling vulnerable. When reclined in a treatment chair and unable to see what is taking place in a sensitive area such as the mouth, there is a sense of not being in control. For those who have experienced pain thrust upon them in the past that continued beyond their pleas, this sensation of helplessness is not something that is easily overcome.
In our office, we frequently see patients because they are beyond what can be treated by a general dentist. A Periodontist specializes in all levels of gum disease. This means that we have the best potential to help you save your natural teeth, even when at advanced levels.
While red, inflamed gums may not sound highly serious, they are. Research has shown that the oral bacteria of periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and create inflammatory reactions. This is known as systemic inflammation. This inflammation has been linked to serious health problems including pre-term babies, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, some cancers, impotency and even Alzheimer’s disease.
Apparently, healthy gums are important to having good, overall health. Your periodontal wellness is important and dental fear can be addressed so you can achieve a healthy, confident smile without feeling white-knuckled in the dental chair! We offer oral sedation, which is in pill form, for relaxation. We also offer I.V. sedation that creates a “twilight sleep” state.
Both sedation options are safe. Trained staff monitor sedated patients throughout treatment using special safety equipment. Both tend to erase most, if not all, memory of treatment afterward and recovery for both is fairly quick. Within hours for oral sedation and without 24 hours for I.V. sedation.
However, as a dental specialist AND a caring, compassionate caregiver, I have seen patients relax the most when they realize our goal is to make sure they are always comfortable. We never want a patient to feel helpless or vulnerable in our dental chair. Once a new patient explains their concerns about comfort and we discuss options to keep them relaxed and comfortable, we will determine – together – the best sedation and pace of treatment that fits.
